Women in AI 2025
The “Women in AI” at KHIPU 2025 will take place on the International Day of Mathematics, Friday, March 14th (3/14, you know why ;-)) at the Centro Cultural CEINA.
KHIPU recognizes itself as an event inspired by the need for diversity, stating in its mission “AI has the potential to dramatically improve the lives of people and increase the prosperity of businesses, but solving a problem as hard as intelligence will require a diversity of thought and the best minds from every corner of the globe.”
A key aspect of diversity, beyond geographical, is gender. We know that less than 27% of the AI workforce are women and that has proved problematic for the unfair distribution of risks and benefits of AI.
In that complex landscape, in 2020 Catherine D’Ignazio and Lauren Klein’s book Data Feminism came to offer us a framework to think about data and AI critically but also transformatively, to re-think what we are doing and, more importantly, what can we do to use these tools to advance social justice. Later, Ivana Feldfeber and her team in Data Genero, came together to translate the book and make Feminismo de Datos available to Spanish speakers and made it concrete in AymurAI, an NLP project to make available anonymized data about gender violence in judicial documents.
We are delighted to have Catherine D’Ignacio and Ivana Feldfeber as main speakers in KHIPU 2025 Women in AI.
As part of the Women in AI event on March 14th, we are delighted to announce a Mentorship Roundtables Session & Lunch, endorsed by Women in Machine Learning (WiML) which will take place from 12:30pm-13:30pm at Universidad de Chile (one block from CEINA). We’ll cover a diverse range of mentorship topics, from research to career and life advice with the aim of providing a unique opportunity to connect with experienced mentors, gaining valuable insights and building a supportive network.
