KHIPU.AI: Latin American AI Institute
KHIPU.AI – Latin American AI Institute’s mission is to support the advancement of Latin American talent, research, and companies to shape the future of artificial intelligence through advanced training, collaborative research, and a connected regional ecosystem.
Named after the Andean khipu—the system of knotted cords used across the region to record and transmit knowledge—KHIPU began in 2019 as a biennial gathering bringing together researchers and students from across Latin America with the international scientific community. Since 2019, we have trained 1,200+ students and researchers across four flagship editions and supported 30+ KHIPUx community events across 10 countries. In 2024, we established KHIPU.AI – Latin American AI Institute as a nonprofit organization to expand our year-round reach and long-term sustainability.

Two Core Programs
Flagship KHIPU Meeting
Our week-long gathering brings together students, faculty, startup founders, and international researchers for advanced lectures, practical tutorials, workshops, research poster sessions, and mentorship. Following editions in Montevideo (2019, 2023), online (2021), and in Santiago (2025), our next flagship meeting takes place in São Paulo, Brazil (April 5–9, 2027).
KHIPUx Regional Events
Launched in 2024, KHIPUx supports locally organized AI workshops, schools, and community initiatives across Latin America, extending KHIPU’s reach beyond the flagship meeting and bringing advanced AI education to more students and institutions throughout the region.

Participation in our events is 100% free for all selected students, researchers, and faculty. Sponsorship directly funds our flagship meeting and regional KHIPUx programs, with a significant share allocated to travel and accommodation grants for students and faculty across Latin America (over 520 travel and accommodation grants awarded across our 2019, 2023, and 2025 editions) so talented researchers can attend regardless of financial means.
