For KHIPU 2027, we are expanding the programme with a dedicated space for workshops and interactive sessions during the last two days of the event. We invite proposals that create opportunities to learn, discuss, experiment, collaborate, and build connections within the Latin American AI community.

There will be a maximum of four concurrent workshops, and the KHIPU audience (approximately 600 participants) distributed across the different sessions.

Workshops and tutorials in the traditional sense are very welcome, and we expect them to form the core of the programme. We are also open to other formats, including hands-on activities, coding sessions, research discussions, forums, round tables, demonstrations, community-building activities, or combinations of these.

If you have an idea that can bring the KHIPU community together to learn, exchange ideas, and create something new, we want to hear it.

What Can You Propose?

Workshops and Tutorials

Traditional community-driven conference-style workshops and tutorials, hands-on or interactive sessions that teach a research topic in depth, introduce a methodology or a tool, or bring an emerging area of AI to a broad audience.

Forums and Discussions

Interactive discussions around important questions for AI research and practice, including round tables, panels, debates, breakout discussions, and unconference-style sessions.

Research and Community Sessions

Sessions focused on emerging research directions, open problems, scientific communities, or challenges faced by researchers and practitioners in Latin America.

Showcases and Demonstrations

Interactive presentations of projects, datasets, software, applications, open-source initiatives, or other work where participants can engage directly with the material or its creators.

Other Formats

We will also consider creative formats that do not fit neatly into a conventional workshop, provided the goals of the session and the plan for achieving them are clear.

A session could combine research, technology, education, art, policy, or other perspectives on artificial intelligence.

Registration, Funding, and Participation

Please note that acceptance of a workshop proposal does not automatically imply travel or accommodation funding. Organisers are responsible for making their own travel and accommodation arrangements unless specific support is subsequently confirmed by KHIPU.

Details regarding available financial support for workshop organisers and invited speakers will be shared after acceptance notifications.

Acceptance of a workshop proposal will guarantee a minimum of three full-week places at KHIPU 2027 for workshop organisers/speakers. Workshop organisers may request additional places, which will be considered subject to the availability of places and other relevant factors.

In addition, each accepted workshop will be allocated a number of workshop-specific places, initially expected to be around 20, for participants attending that workshop. If demand exceeds the available places, a waiting list may be established.

Proposal Format

Submissions for workshop organisation should consist of no more than three pages of proposal, plus organiser bios (maximum 1 page per organiser).

Main Proposal

The main proposal, limited to three pages, must include:

1. Title and Workshop Description

Provide a clear title and description of the workshop topic and content.

Explain, for instance:

• The motivation and importance of the topic.
• Why the topic is timely and relevant.
• What is fresh or distinctive about the proposed workshop.
• Which audiences would benefit from attending.
• What participants will learn, discuss, create, or take away from the session.

2. Format and Structure

Describe the proposed format of the workshop and how participants will engage with the material and with one another.

The format may include lectures, hands-on activities, coding exercises, group discussions, breakout sessions, demonstrations, panels, or other interactive components.

Include a tentative agenda showing how the available time will be used.

The proposed duration should be appropriate for the planned activities. We anticipate sessions of approximately 2 hours, although other formats may be considered.

In any case, the format and the implementation details may be further tailored through discussion between the organisers and the KHIPU 2027 committee.

3. Invited Speakers and Participants

Provide a list of invited speakers, instructors, panellists, or other participants, if applicable.

Indicate which participants have:

• Confirmed their participation.
• Been invited but have not yet confirmed.
• Been identified as tentative.

Please also indicate which participants have applied to KHIPU 2027 through the standard application process.

We encourage organisers to consider inviting researchers who are already confirmed as KHIPU speakers or who are planning to attend KHIPU 2027 to participate in their workshops.

4. Diversity and Inclusion

Describe the diversity of the proposed organisers and speakers.

Also describe any efforts to encourage and support participation from diverse communities. These may include, for example:

• Inclusive calls for participation.
• Careful consideration of the topics and format.
• Efforts to include participants from different countries (in particular, fostering integration between Latin American and non-Latin American participants), institutions, career stages, disciplines, and backgrounds.

We particularly encourage proposals that strengthen representation and participation from the diverse communities that make up Latin America and the broader KHIPU community.

5. Related KHIPUx Events

If the workshop has a related KHIPUx event, please provide:

• The name and location of the KHIPUx event.
• The number of attendees.
• Any relevant information about the previous event.
• The names of speakers shared between the KHIPUx event and the proposed KHIPU workshop.

If there is no related KHIPUx event, this section may be omitted.

6. Special Requirements and Technical Needs

Describe any special requirements for the workshop.

Examples include computing resources, Internet access, specific software or hardware, room layout, or materials that need to be provided to participants.

7. Workshop Tagline

Provide a very brief advertisement or tagline for the workshop, of no more than 140 characters, highlighting the key information prospective attendees should know.

This text may be used to advertise the workshop on the KHIPU website and other communication channels.

Organiser Information

The organiser information must fit on one page per organiser.

For each organiser, provide:

Contact Information

Include: full name, affiliation, and email address.

Research Interests and Expertise

Provide a brief statement describing the organiser’s research interests, areas of expertise, and relevant professional background.

Workshop and Event Organisation Experience

Describe relevant experience organising workshops, tutorials, conferences, or other related events.

Previous KHIPU Participation

Indicate whether each organiser has attended previous editions of KHIPU, or KHIPUx events.

Relationship with the KHIPU Community

Briefly describe the organisers’ relationship with the KHIPU community.

This may include previous participation in KHIPU, collaborations with members of the community, involvement in KHIPUx, teaching activities, research collaborations, or other contributions.

Please indicate whether any organiser is proposing or co-organising another workshop at KHIPU 2027.

What Makes a Good KHIPU Workshop?

We are looking for workshops that are:

Relevant

The topic should be meaningful to the KHIPU community and contribute to the broader conversation around artificial intelligence in Latin America and beyond.

Engaging

Participants should have an active role in the session.

We encourage organisers to think carefully about how participants will interact with the material, the organisers, and each other.

Original

We are interested in sessions that bring new ideas, perspectives, formats, or communities to KHIPU.

A workshop does not necessarily need to present entirely new research. It should, however, offer participants something valuable that they are unlikely to get from a standard conference talk.

Inclusive

KHIPU brings together a diverse community from across Latin America and the world.

We encourage proposals that create opportunities for participation across different countries, institutions, disciplines, career stages, and levels of experience.

Well Designed

A strong proposal should make it clear:

• Who the workshop is for.
• Why the topic matters.
• What participants will gain.
• What will happen during the session.
• How participants will actively engage with the material.

Feasible

The proposed activities should be realistic given the requested duration, number of organisers, expected attendance, and available resources.
