Jonathan Hersh

Jonathan Hersh is an Associate Professor of Economics and Management Science at Chapman University’s Argyros School of Business. His research focuses on leveraging machine learning to create managerial indicators, enhance decision-making, and address the economic and social challenges of digital platforms. Specializing in machine learning applications on unstructured data such as images and text, Professor Hersh works in both predictive and causal modeling.
In addition to his academic role, he serves as the Principal Machine Learning Scientist at Workhelix, a VC-backed startup dedicated to helping companies navigate AI-driven workforce transformations. He frequently consults the World Bank and other multilateral development banks on their use of AI for good.
Professor Hersh’s research has been featured in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Management Information Systems Quarterly, and Management Science and other journals. In 2023 he was awarded the BBVA foundation “Frontiers of Science” award for his paper on using AI to estimate war-related bombing damage in satellite imagery. He holds degrees from the University of Chicago, Boston University, and the University of Pennsylvania, and has previously lectured at MIT and Wellesley College.
