Sandra Avila is a Professor at the University of Campinas, Brazil (since 2017). She is also a faculty member in the RECOD Lab (REasoning for COmplex Data). Her current research interests include Machine Learning and AI techniques for healthcare, sensitive media analysis, precision agriculture, and other tasks. She received a Google Research Awards for Latin America (2018) for the project “Improving Skin Cancer Classification with Generative Adversarial Networks”.
Sandra has a Ph.D., double degree, in Computer Science from the Pierre and Marie Curie University (now Sorbonne University), France, and from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2013, a M.Sc. in Computer Science from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2008, and a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the Federal University of Sergipe, Brazil, in 2006.
Her passion is to encourage more girls and women to pursue STEM fields.
